iBracadabra_ Final(W6)

In 2050, Stefan, the founder of the Waffle, present a new revolutionary product.

It is an infomercial+design fiction video that parodying Apple’s 2007 announcement, and 2016 Don’t Blink commercial.

We want to make a janky concept infomercial video. Stefan(performed by Hayk) pretends professional, but he is not good at it. Also, the “iBracadabra” is not a real product, Stefan cheats with his assistant(performed by me, Jaekook) that looks like real magic using a black costume and black background.

I had performed the black assistant and made title intro and outro. I parodied Apple’s 2016 “Don’t Blink” commercial to give more contrast between the intro/outro and Stefan’s janky presentation. I thought it makes the story(or concept) of video stronger.

The whole process is not easy but has so much fun. I have learned basic knowledge of video, sound, and storytelling. Also, work as a team and communication. 


Shooting iBracadabra(W4)

Shooting day: Sunday Morning, September 30

We are planned to shoot the video in the Sunday morning starts from 8:00 am because our location is middle of the ITP floor, it can cause a background noise problem. But…there was a hidden problem that is lighting.

During Becca and Hayk are prepare camera, sound, and acting, I set up the stage, especially the lighting.

We choose micro studio in the ITP floor, it seems fit to our concept of the video. But, this area is surrounded by black curtains, so it doesn’t have any natural light. first I use two sets of six lamps light. It’s really bright but too bright. We use a whiteboard for projection but the light is too strong so projection is invisible and also the actor couldn’t open his eyes and also it couldn’t fill the whole shooting area. therefore I turn the light’s direction to the upper side for using reflection from the the ceiling which is white. Now, we can see the projection and acting without frown but it’s not enough light. In our story,  the protagonist and his assistant where a black colored cloth, but it’s hard to recognize because of the dim light. So I add five more light; two spotlights and two led lights for the key light, one six lamps light for back light.
This set-up process had taken too much time than we expected, so there were people around the floor when we started shooting. However, fortunately,  the mike works so well, the noise wasn’t the problem.
That day the whole shooting process was not working smoothly as we planned before, but we learned a lot and had had a fun time and great experience.


Audio piece reflection(3W, Soundwalk)

After the experience of three weeks of collaboration and opinion from other teams, I learned that the importance of language for communication. For working as a team, we had to share the same goal and understanding about it. To achieve it, sophisticated communication is an essential part.

I tried to deliver my opinion but my boundary of words are small so far, I felt difficulty in it. It gives me felt like I miss many chances to learn around me.  But our team members were the really good listener(Thank you for Tee and Veronica), and tried to understand my thought.

After all of the final walks, I had learned the introduction is significant. Detailed info can improve the understanding of the audiences about the project. It makes them fall into the story and expand their experience.

Lost is the based on what’s behind the doors(the 1week idea)

We use our door sounds to make a story that getting lost in some floor at 721 Broadway. The building is the Tisch School of The Arts, so we thought we don’t know what’s behind the doors on each floor because it’s an art school. Every door has their sound behind it. And we wanted the audiences to feel some curiosity, nervous, anxious, and relief during the find out the exit(or going back to the ITP).

The audiences started from the elevator in the lobby of the building and waiting stranger. And the elevator door is open, then Soundwalk start. Take into the elevator and follow the stranger’s floor and getting lost.

After the first week, we(me, Tawania, Veronica) had meetings to give the shape a plan and make it really based on ou recorded sounds of the doors, steps, and people’s.  So, we

  1. Made a structure of the narrative
  2. Arranged the sources based on the #1
  3. Went to the 1st test with the first draft
  4. Figure out what we need(Sound FX, more detail in the Sound for the arc)
  5. Found and gathered Sound FX on the web
  6. Added layers on the track to make Soundwalk richer and mixing and editing.
  7. Went to the 2nd test with the second draft with our earphones. (want to check how it works on normal earphones)
  8. Measured the time of each floor
  9. Made Introduction of the Soundwalk(Regular and Braille version)
  10. Mixed and edited
  11. Went to the 3rd test with Aida and Jordan(Thank you for helping)
  12. Finalized the file

And, we separate our roles for the efficiency.
Veronica arranged the sources on the track and designed the introduction.
Tawania found soundFX and print the introduction for regular and braille version. And I mixed and edited the tracks.

What’s behind the doors?(1w_Soundwalk)

Our team(Me, Tawania, Veronica) collect the sounds of the doors in 721 Broadway for introducing 721 Broadway.

This is the idea that I had shared with our team. (We keep trying to build up this idea)

I thought our subject goal is an introduction to the people about 721 Broadway building through the doors. (It’s also following the footstep of every department’s student). So we focus on the elevator door, and I think we have to start at the front door of the building, the main entrance. And every transition to another floor always uses elevator sound. (Never using stairs)
So, start from
Entrance ->1F elevator ->2F->3F~~~>12F->and final step is basement(I thought most of the people who come to this building are students who have their own department floor. So I think to introduce the department is the first thing we have to do. Also, we record all the sound while we move to the other floor using the elevator, so at the last moment, there will be really long recording from 12F to Basement.

And each floor we record the room sound of each departments lobby plus our verbal introduction like, at the front door “We are now starting our journey to 721 Broadway building the Tisch School of The Arts, What’s behind this door?” And I want to show this really slowly and relax mood.

Our first record is September 6, Thursday.
When we met for the first time, we review the how to use Zoom recorder and after that went to exploration to 721 Broadway for checking what is in this building. We had started from the 12th floor, and it felt like we sneak around the building. The idea, “What’s behind the door” started from that. During the exploration, we lost in the building(seriously, the building is a maze!) and finally got out to the Gallatin School side. Unfortunately, we couldn’t record at that moment.

The hard part of collecting sounds was to get clean sounds and control the sensitivity of mic.

After listened “Sound Walk 9:09” and “Her Black Long Hair”(1w_Soundwalk)

I have listened to two sound walks in the syllabus.

1. Sound Walk 9:09 by John Luther Adams

2. Her Long Black Hair by Janet Cardiff

Each work gives me way different experience through sound.

I listened “Sound Walk 9:09” first, this one change the texture between me and outside of the space where I’m standing. It makes me personal area even I’m in the outside during hear the Sound Walk. Every time, I holding or walking in the street, there is a bunch of information from everything around me like signals, ads, people, cars, sound, light or building. But when the Sound Walk begins, it makes me like an Observer or makes me in personal space wherever I’m standing, and it feels like I’m in the surreal place that even I’m in the real site at that moment.

However, Her Long Black Hair gives me the opposite way of experience than Sound Walk 9:09. I listened this one on the 4th floor 721 Broadway, but when I start to hear Her Long Black Hair, it brought me into the Central Park. The clean three-dimensional sound makes me more space in my head, and this separates me from the real world in a different way than the Sound Walk 9:09. It expands my sense of hearing, and I can imagine what she sees now, and feel the atmosphere of where she is standing.

Both of works are using street sound around them. However, the result is different. I think it depends on how to deal with the ingredient. The first one, “Sound Walk 9:09” uses the street sound to make music. John said he sculpted and filtered these street sounds to reveal resonances, and I think this is creating the surreal texture and atmosphere around listeners, and that fabrication makes different than “Her Long Black Hair” even both are using sound from the real world.

And “Her Long Black Hair,” I feel Janet focused on delivering the story as a real experience through clear and exact ingredient of sound. She makes three-dimensional room in the listeners head using those clean sources, and it makes you feel and imagine the Central Park only by hearing.
